Ploughing perfection returns Continued from page 1 The 12 horses are usually based at Erewhon Station in Mid Canterbury along with 50 others in the care of Colin Drummond and his partner Erin Cassie. The Clydesdales prove more effective on the harsh landscape than modern farm machinery. Erin says the 35,000 acre property at the top of the Rangitata Gorge that Colin has owned since 1998 suits a hard-working horse rather than machinery. “We have a station with two major rivers that flood often so the horses handle that and the terrain much better.
“We have a saying that a Clydesdale only gets stronger with work where farm machinery starts to breakdown over time. The Station runs Merino Sheep, Hereford Cattle and includes a large Clydesdale Horse Stud where they currently have 65 horses on site. Erin says both she and Colin like to keep the Clydesdale breed in the public eye and see the Marlborough Ploughing Association event as a key part of their calendar. “We’ve been coming up for six years now and we love doing it because the Blenheim people are so friendly and supportive of us.” Erin and Colin use horses because
they are predominately quicker to ride most places, and it doesn’t matter what the river is doing, they can still get back. The Clydesdale team started off as a hobby, but have turned into a costefficient way of getting the crops in the ground and getting around the station safely. Erin says they can fit 10 horses in their horse float but would likely “add on a trailer and tinker a bit” to ensure 12 made it up. “We like to loan them out from time-to-time to people who are interested in them. “The Clydesdale is very reliable and pleasant natured to be around,”
Erin says. “We get a bit blasé about the risk of being kicked or hurt; they’re very strong but very placid.” They also breed Clydesdales with thoroughbred horses occasionally which makes for a more athletic and powerful horse. The event will be held at the Jordan Property, Jacksons Road, Blenheim from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday with gold coin entry. Vintage class t ractors a nd ploughs will compete to represent Marlborough at the New Zealand 2016 final. There will also be farm animal and dog demonstrations. For more see page 18.

to use their fire pot to cook on and International Marshmallow Day was a great opportunity for a bit of fun and a way to teach fire safety with the children. Youth Trust Events co-ordinator Deedee Brancroft says there was
anywhere between 200 and 400 people who came to the event at Liz Davidson Place and they went through 1000’s of packets of marshmallows. There was a whole different range of people there, mostly intermediate and
teens but there were also parents with younger kids who got involved too. The Marlborough Youth Trust were happy with the way things were run and there were no accidents. Deedee says they will run it again next year.

Emergency centre opens doors to public A life saving behind the scenes look at Coastguard Marlborough By Celeste Lodewyk Have you ever wanted to see what goes on behind the scenes at Coastguard Marlborough? Coastguard Marlborough is hosting an Open Day on September 12 from 10am to 2pm at the Picton Olgilvie Lee Emergency Operations Centre in Picton. The Open Day will be aimed at highlighting the fundraising for a new vessel, providing water safety checklists to the public and creating a general awareness of how Coastguard Marlborough supports the community. Located at the Picton Memorial Park and Picton Marina, the public will be treated to being able to go on board both the Interisland Rescue and Port Marlborough

“Any questions you may have about rules on the water, our trained skippers can answer them,” Coastguard Marlborough committee member Bo Baines says. An educational element will be how Coastguard Marlborough can help the community. “You don’t have to be on a boat to need the assistance of Coastguard Marlborough,” Bo says. On the day there will be a gold coin donation as well as a ‘Boats Bits Garage Sale’ held, so if people has anything they would like to donate towards the sale it will be greatly appreciated. Any old car or boat batteries people are also wanting to get rid of can be left at the centre or phone to arrange a collection.
Man charged over crash on bridge A 39 year old man appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday following a crash on the Grove Road Bridge early on Saturday morning. The man is facing 15 charges
following the incident which occurred about 4am on Saturday. The driver of one of the two cars fled the scene before Police arrived. Police arrested the man after
executing a search warrant at a Blenheim address in the early hours of Sunday morning. The man has been charged with 15 offences including drug, firearms, driving and assault
charges. No one was seriously injured in the incident and police would not confirm whether the incident happened while the cars were racing.

Current ward system stays The Marlborough District Council has opted to stay with the current ward system by which citizens are represented, although they are recommending that a small adjustment be made to ward boundaries. Councillors were required to review the ward system this year, to consider whether the current system was satisfactory or whether there should be change to the number or distribution of councillors.

Theatre’s final fundraising push

The new ASB Theatre is heading into its final fundraising drive to raise $2 million in the next two months. The Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust announced the final fundraising campaign on Sunday during a tour of the building site. The money will be used to fit out the theatre with lighting, sound and other stage equipment Half the roof is now closed in and guests on the tour were able to see large dressing rooms almost complete, specialist backstage areas for choral groups and orchestra, technical areas, the smaller 200-capacity studio theatre and the spacious scenery docks to each side of the main stage. The theatre also has a full laundry area, required by many touring groups such as ballet and dance companies. The focus of the final phase of the fundraising campaign will be a chance for the public to ‘sponsor a seat’ with their name engraved on a seat in the auditorium or on a donation board.

Speakers at the tour on Sunday – trust chairman Kevin Moseley, fundraising chairwoman Robyn Cuddon and Ross – talked about wanting the best possible theatre complex for Marlborough people, attracting top-line performing groups. Flag final cut Dear Ed, This is my preferred flag choice. Why? It honours both the previous flag and the country’s Maori culture. It’s easily identified as being from New Zealand, it’s stylish yet very traditional, so I was thrilled to see if made the final four. Times they are a changin’ Dear Ed, There is a bigger issue than just those two girls not going to the combined formal this year. They aren’t enrolled students so I can understand Marlborough Girls’ stance in not letting them go despite it being a tough break for the girls. A bigger is this ancient rule that only students from each school can attend. Why can’t a MBC pupil take a girl from another school say in Nelson or Christchurch?
This isn’t the 1950s and the rule seems outdated in my view. Students from both colleges go to many events, whether they sporting or cultural where they socialise with people from other schools and both colleges should be willing to accept this and bend the rules to fit 2015. As long as one of the two goes to either college then I think they should be allowed to take their partner as long as they are enrolled at a school and its age appropriate. Dwayne O’Sullivan

It’s Dog gone crazy Dear Ed, I wonder how many Marlborough residents actually know the process around dog control in the region. I most certainly did not, but learned rather quickly recently. My German Shepherd (a breed often much feared due to their use by police and as guard dogs) temporarily escaped from my yard and was involved in a quick stoush with a dog outside my house. While I quickly brought him under control, it was a bit of a crazy few seconds. No dog or person was bitten or hurt but the people passing my house thought it necessary to advise animal control - and I don’t really blame them for this. Within the hour, animal control were on my doorstep to seize my dog. I was greatly shocked by this, as I did not realise that council had the power to seize a dog so quickly. Every person I have spoken to has also been surprised by this. I canvassed two local councillors at the time and both were also shocked. So I wonder, do our local dog owners realise that this can happen? Another local dog owner lost his dog recently because it bit someone who entered his property. A person climbed a fence (illegally and without permission), ignored a ‘beware of dog sign”, only to be attacked by a German Shepherd guarding its property. It seems to me that the owner has nowhere to go here. A trained guard dog is securely fenced, warning signs are displayed and the property accessed illegally, yet the dog gets all the blame. While I believe our animal control people do a great job, I can’t help thinking that some of this seems a little heavy handed. Eddie lassie.

Time with gentle giants Vicki Baker is not one for holidays lying by the pool; she would rather have cold showers while spending her days chopping down banana trees in the blazing sun or scooping up elephant pooh. She talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about her three week stint at a Thai elephant rescue shelter, what she learnt, changing perceptions and what and where her next wildlife adventure may be. An eye opening experience does not seem to cut it when describing Vicki Baker’s latest “holiday”. The Blenheim real estate agent spent three weeks at an animal rescue centre in Thailand caring for elephants rescued from the grips of a punishing tourism regime. “The rescue centre is called WFFT (Wildlife Friends of Thailand) and I was working specifically with their elephants so that’s where I’ve been for three weeks. An animal lover from childhood, Vicki takes bi-annual trips to various parts of the world looking after animals “I’ve worked with orangutans, Asiatic black bears; I’ve worked in Africa on reserves so this was an extension of that. “I was unaware before this just how elephants were trained in these horrific practices. “The elephants they had at the rescue centre were showing signs of emotional and physical distress,” she says. “Many of them had spinal injuries and bung legs, marks over them where they had been bashed or where they had chains around their neck. “There is a rotation of volunteers from all around the world. Vicki says many elephants are victims of Thailand’s crucial tourism sector “Generally these animals are in the tourism sector and are made to perform tricks or they’re in the trekking industry where they carry large amounts on their back, with six people on their backs at a time and are often malnourished. “They often have arthritis or diabetes - they aren’t fed the way they should be in the
tourism sector. “Elephants are very noble and intelligent. “When I approached them to feed them many would start dancing which is very sad.” The elephants are trained by fear. “They don’t use positive reinforcement because it takes too long and costs too much compared to training them with fear. “They use a hook and if you see an elephant in South East Asia you’ll see a trainer running that hook under their ear and it looks quite gentle but in reality it’s only been like that because the elephant has been beaten with it many times. “They get smacked with it in all their sensitive areas and it breaks them and you know when that happens because they’ll scream.” “The message is don’t think an elephant is enjoying dancing for you or is happy to carry you on a trek, it’s simply doing it out of fear and attempting to stay alive.” Vicki a former fisheries officer says accommodation was basic. “You’re in huts; you have a cold shower and a toilet, certainly nothing flash. “No swimming pool but there is a river. “The rescue centre gets 75 per cent of its income from the volunteers. “I’d love to go back but there are other places I’d like to go. “There’s a cheetah rescue place in Namibia I have my eye on. “Make no mistake I really enjoy it but I’ve seen some pretty ugly things.” “If it stops a few tourists riding elephants in Thailand or watching a circus where they perform then that’s good. “You can do a day trip to the rescue centre

that allows tourists to feed and wash an elephant so there is an alternative which gives you more exposure and is far more pleasant for the animal. “There are only 2300 elephants left in the wild in Thailand which is about two or three per cent of the original population they once had and yet there are 6000 domesticated elephants there and they all have to produce an income for their owners and that’s how they get neglected. “We did our first feed at 6.30am and made banana balls out of bananas, bran and elephant pellets and they have four feeds a day so there was a lot of picking up pooh.
“We’d wash and scrub them every day. “I’d take them for a walk down a little forrest path which always looks interesting when you have a giant elephant behind you but a bucket of fruit ensures they will follow you. “The other thing we did every third day was harvest banana trees which is really hard work in the blazing Thai sun. “They also eat hay and other greenery but they love going into the forest because they knock down everything. I found them to be a gentle animal considering if they wanted to they could squash you like a fly.”

Grove Road base welcome addition Jack’s Tyres has up until this year been a full mobile service operating in Marlborough, but now since the opening of its showroom owner Jack McLauchlan is pleased with the growth. Jack’s Tyres is based in Nelson, but with the amount of Marlborough customers who travelled to them in Nelson, Jack felt it was a good opportunity to establish a base in Blenheim. “We had a lot of Marlborough people come
over on the weekend and have their tyres done on a Saturday morning. “Plus the fleet service side of the business is really busy in Marlborough, servicing industries such as forestry, transport and industrial, so it made sense to set up in Blenheim,” he says. The business is located in the former Norm Fowke Glass premises on 13 Grove Road, and in addition to its showroom there is a work-
shop facility where customers can drive in and have new tyres placed on their vehicles. Managing the Blenheim site is Wayne Pattie and operating the commercial fleet service is Rikki Smith, both locals to the area. The business which opened in November last year had always planned to open its back room to operate as a store. Plenty of preparation and renovation has been carried out in time for Saturday’s launch, which manager Kristina Lipowska says will be a hit with locals and tourists. The Store will have everything from handcrafted chocolates, all made onsite, icecream, sorbets, cookies, smoothies and milkshakes. “Come in and sample the eight icecream and sorbet flavours we will have and try our chocolates and cookies, you won’t be disappointed,” she says.

There is also a shelving area where locals can rent a space to display and sell their wares. “We encourage locals to display their products, whether it be jam, honey or crafts, and we can sell on your behalf,” she says. Another exciting venture will be their icecream tours, where adults and children
can book in groups to learn how to make icecream. “This is a great idea for children’s birthday parties, giving them something unique and different where they can learn at the same time,” Kristina says. Children’s parties and large groups can book a tour by contacting Kristina at the cafe.

New business evokes curiosity Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Just when you thought the boating scene in Marlborough couldn’t get any better, a change of hands and a renewed enthusiasm has seen a business on Grove Road undergo an exciting transformation. What was formerly the Powerboat Centre on Grove Road has been re-branded Marlborough Watercraft by new owners Pete and Ange Walters. The husband and wife duo are originally from up north but came to the region eight years ago for ‘the people and lifestyle’. They took over the rural mail run for RD3 Blenheim and say they had “a ball”. After deciding to get back into what he was good at, Pete and Ange purchased Marlborough Marine in December 2014 which now compliments their latest venture on Grove Road. They quickly set about revamping the business and reintroducing some of the country’s most trusted and reliable brands. “I turned it back into a Yamaha dealership as this high end brand has over 50 percent

of the market, and that many kiwis can’t be wrong,” Pete quips. Marlborough Watercraft has also opened its doors to Haines Hunter and Stabicraft which has enabled them to deliver more leading brands to the region. “Another favourite has been the WaveRunner jetskis which is proving a popular past time for families. “It’s a great toy for the boys, but families can also utilise it,” he says. Along with the re-branding and stock expansion, Marlborough Watercraft is also enjoying its position on Grove Road and the curiosity the change of ownership has evoked. “I’m noticing a lot of the locals like to stop in and catch up for a chat, have a look around and get to know us. “We also get a lot of people coming in from Christchurch who are on their way to Picton. ‘Our father is inspirational’ By Celeste Lodewyk What better way to highlight Father’s Day this Sunday, than to share the story of two sisters who say their father has been an ‘incredible inspiration’ in their lives. Blenheim man and a senior constable, Tony Barrow is the proud father of four and grandfather of three. Twins Jess and Sarah Barrow describe their father Tony as being a strong role model, a cheerleader and above all a “wonderful father”. “What makes him a great father is that he has always had all the time in the world for his girls, because at the end of the day time is the most precious thing you could give anybody,” Jess says. Sarah adds; “He is so inspirational because of all the roles he fulfills for us girls. “He is a teacher, a mentor, a coach, a cheerleader and is someone you can turn to no matter what the situation you are faced with. “Dad has taught us there is never one path in life and there are always twists and turns along the way, but if you are resilient and
keep a strong moral compass you will always achieve your goals.” According to Jess her dad is her ‘rock’. “He is the first person all of us girls turn to if we are in need of advice about anything. “He has always been there for me, by my side my highest of highs (the birth of my daughters), and the lowest of lows (the stillbirth of my first daughter). “Let’s just say our partners have a lot to live up to as he has set the bar very high,” Jess says. Asked what was their best memory of time spent with Tony, here is what they had to say. Sarah; “The best memories I have of my dad are spending time together out on the boat and teaching me to dive. “To me this is often the only time I get to spend with Dad (being one of four girls) and that makes it really special. “Though teaching me to dive he has passed on his passion for the sea.” Jess; “All us four girls have something special that we each do with him, but mine is hunting.
“From a young age he would take me rabbit shooting and I would carry the dead rabbits. My reward was I got to do target practice after the hunt. I’m pretty good now and have just got my own rifle. “It’s not only his daughters who adore him, his granddaughters also love spending time with Tony. “He has three granddaughters who he loves more than anything. “There aren’t any words to describe how much they adore their grandad, and they definitely bring out his softer side. “It’s really clear that he is Mollie’s favourite person in the whole world, and Issie loves all the time he spends with her,” Jess says. Both girls agree that the support Tony has shown his family and the pride he has for them all is something they will always cherish. “He’s an amazing dad and even better granddad, we are very lucky to have him in our lives. “Happy Father’s Day dad.”

The Marlborough Ploughing Association and Tua Marina Vintage Traction and Machinery Club will host their Marlborough Championships this weekend and chances are you could see a future national champion. Marlborough Ploughing president Allan Gifford says with the event acting as a tractor ploughing qualifier for the nationals in Palmerston North, several Marlborough ploughers will be keen to make an impression. “We are also fortunate to have competitors coming from as far away as Canterbury, not to try to qualify because some are already going to Palmerston North, but many just want to test their skills up here. Marlborough’s Ian Woolley is over in Denmark preparing for the World Championships in Denmark, next month. As well as vintage farm machinery from pre 1956, there will also be sheep and dog demonstrations on the Sunday. Hammer heads to Mako country Sport By Jacob Page Former teammates Leon MacDonald and Mark Hammett are set to share the coaching duties at the Tasman Makos from next season. MacDonald will step up to the head coaching role while former Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett will come on board as his assistant for the next two seasons The move comes as current head coach Kieran Keane is set to take on an assistant role with Super Rugby Franchise Cheifs in 2016. Hammett has previous provincial rugby coaching experience with Canterbury in 2006 before moving to Super Rugby as an assistant with the Crusaders from

2007 and 2010. In 2011, Hammett took over the head coaching reins at the Hurricanes, before moving to the UK
with the Cardiff Blues. A strong and durable hooker, he was capped for the All Blacks 29 times, played for the Crusaders 81 times and played 76 matches for Canterbury. Tasman Rugby Union chief executive Tony Lewis says they have the best man for the job. “We’re delighted to have him on board and believe his coaching partnership with Leon will be a fine combination. We are confident that the new coaching group will be successful in growing the legacy established over the last three years.” MacDonald echoed those words. “Hammer is an old team mate

who has massive respect and mana amongst his peers. He’s a straight shooter and competitive, with a huge work ethic and attention to detail. He fits the Makos ethos perfectly and I’m excited about bringing his experience and energy to help grow this team.” Hammett says he is looking forward to the challenge. “Having played with Leon I know we share a similar philosophy on the game. I’ve been itching for an opportunity to work hands on with the players on the grass, rather than as a head coach. This is a great opportunity and I’m looking forward to getting to work as rugby never stands still.”
Hockey tournament
The College Park hockey turf is hosting the Galletly Cup Secondary School Boys’ Tournament this week. A number of second XI teams from around New Zealand are in town for the tournament which will conclude on Friday.
Makos remain perfect Two tries from blindside flanker Pete Samu helped the Tasman Makos ease past the Manawatu Turbos 41-21 in their ITM Cup provincial rugby match at Blenheim’s Lansdowne Park on Thursday night. Another four-try bonus point also helped them maintain their lead in the premiership division. They will next play Otago, in Dunedin, on Friday night.
Cyclists impress on home soil Marlborough cyclists Ethan and Katie Batt were the impressive local performers during the two-day Cuddon South Island secondary schools cycle tour was staged in Marlborough on Saturday and Sunday. Ma rlborough r iders claimed 10 of the 24 races Katie Batt won all four stages in the under-13 girls section. By winning by more than 14 minutes, she won Polka Dot Queen of the Mountain jersey, the Green Sprint Ace jersey and the overall leader’s yellow jersey. Ethan won three of the
four stages in the under20s boys grade and came second in the hill climb, to claim three jerseys including the yellow jersey for the overall winner. Riders from Christchurch and Wellington and Nelson made up a strong field of riders across all the grades. Fairhall School’s Fergus Greer won the under-13 boys category. Football Festival Marlborough Football is running a Girls Football Festival on Sunday September 20 at A & P Park. It is a free event for girls aged five to 17 to give the game a try during New Zealand Football Girls and Women’s week.

Hitchcock snatch victory Marlborough teams won most of the prize money on offer at the prestigious Mark Stevenson First National Marlborough Open held at Simcox Stadium. The pairs went down to the last bowl as Simon and Damin Hitchcock denied Brian Booker and Debbie Wearing back to back titles when they scored two on the last end to snatch victory by 8-7.
On Sunday the fours title went to Errol Fairhurst’s quartet from the Pastimes Club. They came from behind to down the Motueka foursome skipped by Wayne Tibble. Fairhurst’s team consisted of Blair Clemett, Kevin Rowe and Nicola Clemett and they convincingly won by 11-4 after being down 1-4 after four ends.
